New Teacher Handbook

The Teacher Preparation and Induction Department works in collaboration with other divisions, departments, and external entities to oversee federal, state, and local credentialing and compliance initiatives. The department plans, organizes, evaluates and directs the preparation of professional educators along a continuum of experience, from aspiring to veteran. The following programs are included in Teacher Preparation and Support:

 Induction (formerly BTSA)

If you hold an unexpired preliminary credential, are a full-time SDUSD employee, have a probationary or permanent contract and you are interested in enrolling in the San Diego Unified School District Sponsored UC San Diego Extension Induction Program for the 2021-2022 school year, please click here to register your interest. It is important to note that expressing interest in the program does not enroll you into the program. It simply lets SDUSD know that you are interested in participating.  All interested teachers will be contacted in late summer or early fall to discuss eligibility and possible next steps. If you currently hold a leave replacement, temporary or part time contract, please click here for alternative induction program information.

Induction fulfills the requirements for a California Clear Teaching Credential for all general education and special education candidates with preliminary credentials in accordance with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

For questions regarding eligibility for the program, please contact Teacher Preparation and Support Department, Karen Evans at kevans@sandi.net. For additional information and questions about program requirements, please contact UC San Diego Extension, Andrew Koppert, program director, at akoppert@ucsd.edu.

Highly Qualified Teachers

A key goal of the federal Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) is that every student will receive instruction from a "highly qualified" teacher (HQT).
