School Psychology Practicum and Fieldwork Opportunities

San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) provides opportunities that support practicum and fieldwork students in the field of School Psychology. SDUSD requires that a minimum of 450 practicum hours be completed in order to be eligible for a school psychologist internship position in accordance with standards specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing ( As a first step towards being considered for a practicum experience in SDUSD, practicum (pre-internship level) students should contact the Related and Specialized Services Office and complete a practicum application. In addition to the application students must submit the documents listed below:

  • Unofficial transcripts of graduate course work to date
  • University's requirements and sequence of study for school psychology
  • Copy of Certificate of Clearance
  • Current TB test
  • Evidence of Professional Liability Insurance

Students shall secure Professional Liability Insurance at their own expense and carry such insurance in full force during the term of their respective placements in an amount of no less than $1 Million per occurrence and $3 Million annual aggregate.

Please submit this information to the Related and Specialized Services Office attention Jeff Hoffman (4350 Mt. Everest Blvd. B-7, San Diego, CA 92117). After potential practicum students have submitted the necessary documents and have received fingerprinting and clearance, they will work with the Senior School Psychologists' office to determine next steps in matching them with an appropriate supervisor (pending the availability of supervisors) that can assist in providing the practicum student's educational program needs and experience. Students are required to commit to at least one full day per week and no more than 3 days, with specific days and times mutually agreed upon between the student and the supervisor. Practicum students cannot obtain more than 3 days per week for their practicum experience. Practicum hours are unpaid and cannot be completed as part of your job duties or in the same location that you work if you are a current SDUSD employee.

Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be accepted beginning June 1, 2019 through December 20, 2019. No applications will be accepted after that date. No practicum experiences will begin after February 1, 2020.
