Ground Breaking

February 8, 2018 -- Patrick Henry High School - and the vast construction work that's underway on the campus - has served as a living classroom for students interested pursing architecture, construction and related fields in college and the workforce. Students from throughout the San Diego Unified School District toured the campus last week with experts from by the district's Propositions S and Z Facilities Planning and Construction Business Outreach team and the Julia Morgan Society of the Women's Construction Coalition (WCC).

Encouraging students to explore careers in architecture, engineering and construction, the district's Facilities Planning and Construction project team spoke about their experiences in the construction industry and fielded questions from the students. Students toured the recently completed San Diego Architectural Foundation Orchid award-winning Patrick Henry High School Arts, Media and Entertainment Performing Arts Center (PHAME), a new classroom building under construction and other campus renovation projects underway.

From architecture to engineering, the WCC works to enhance the role of women in the construction industry. The Julia Morgan Society focuses on mentoring high school and college level students so that they can become successful professionals in the industry. Julia Morgan, the namesake for the student mentorship program of the WCC, is well known for having designed over 700 buildings. She was the first female graduate from UC Berkeley's civil engineering program, and was the first female architect in California. She is most well-known for designing and managing the construction of the famous Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. The Julia Morgan Society has clubs throughout schools in San Diego County.

"Julia Morgan stands as a beacon in the construction industry for young women everywhere," said district Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Here at San Diego Unified, our motto is 'Work hard. Be Kind. Dream Big, No Excuses.', and WCC and Julia Morgan Society are making sure young women do just that. They can be the next award-winning architects and engineers."

The district's Facilities Planning and Construction Business Outreach team reaches out to new contractors, including women-owned business enterprises, to inform them of design and construction business opportunities. "We strive to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women and to emphasize the growing role of women in design, engineering and construction because the buildings that we create together inspire us and reflect who we are as a society," said Lee Dulgeroff, District Chief of Facilities Planning and Construction.

The Business Outreach team works with small companies to give them the tools and resources they need to develop and submit qualified bids on district facilities projects and was recently recognized for successes in increasing the business participation rates of women- and veteran-owned businesses in the district's Propositions S and Z capital facilities bond program. "We have worked closely with WCC to ensure small, women-owned businesses are qualified, ready and able to bid on district projects," said Karen Linehan, manager of the Business Outreach team. "In highlighting the growing role of women in the construction industry and raising awareness of career opportunities to students, the Business Outreach team is supporting the next generation of architects and engineers." Students from Students from Patrick Henry, Morse, and San Diego high schools participated in the tour.

Patrick Henry High School Projects Information: These projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23-year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15-year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012.

PHAME (complete): Designed by PJHM Architects, the state-of-the-art facility features a 500-seat performing arts center and a College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Production Studios program space, which wraps around half of the theater. The project also includes an enclosed lobby area, ticket booth, student store and parking lot expansion. Influenced by the surrounding area, the design of the facility used heavy timbers, open glass and the colors and textures of the environment around it. The new theatre includes a 45-foot-high fly loft, a 20- foot-high proscenium and an orchestra pit.

Whole Site Modernization Phase 2 (ongoing): The Whole Site Modernization (WSM) Phase II work at Henry High School includes construction of a new two-story classroom building that features 41,723 square feet, 24 standard classrooms, two Regional Occupational Program (ROP) classrooms, and an ROP observation room. The ROP classrooms have a secure, fenced-in outdoor play yard with landscape, turf, and play structures. The project provides new outdoor learning areas and a shade canopy within the courtyard.

Improvements to the administration office include a remodeled entrance with shade canopy, landscape, hardscape, a new glass storefront-style design, and a new staff lounge area. Site improvements include reconfiguration of the existing parking lot to accommodate approximately 55 staff parking stalls. The project provides accessibility and other improvements to satisfy California Building Code requirements, including fire prevention, safety, sustainability, and energy efficiency. This project is funded by Proposition Z, with co-funding for the ROP classrooms from the Office of College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE).

Stadium and Sports Improvements (ongoing): The Henry High School Stadium and Sports Facility project includes construction of new athletic facilities buildings at the football stadium, softball and baseball fields; and new scoreboards, goal posts and bleachers.
