NEWS RELEASE – University City High School Marks Construction Milestone As Investment In Campus Transformation Continues
Leading up to Friday's home football game against Mar Vista, the University City High School community were joined by district leaders to celebrate the completion of several construction projects. Including a renovated space for the Fabrication and Design College, Career, and Technical Education program and new athletic facilities, the recent Proposition S and Z funded investments have continued the transformation of the University City High School campus.
"San Diego voters deserve a pat on the back," said school board trustee Dr. John Lee Evans. "Whether it is to provide students a space to have hands-on experiences in science and technology or new fields that give students a space to exercise, socialize and be healthy, Propositions S and Z have allowed the school district to invest in a wide range of facilities that better prepare our students for their futures."
The existing University City High School woodshop and adjacent classroom space was modified to accommodate the new College, Career &;; Technical Education (CCTE) Fabrication and Design program. The project included minor revisions to existing interior space planning and direct connection between the equipment work area and an existing classroom to be utilized as a computer lab. The project also included replacing existing equipment with new technical equipment, new heating/ventilation/air conditioning, lighting, fire protection, and furniture, fixtures and other equipment.
The athletic facilities and parking lot upgrades project involved a series of related projects that optimized the football field stadium, upper athletic fields, gymnasium, bus drop off and parking lots. The projects provided additional 6,722 square feet of support facilities include new restrooms, ticket booth, concession stands, storage buildings, and monument tower at the football field entrance. The parking lot improvements reconfigured the bus drop-off, vehicle loading zones and pedestrian paths of travel. Additional features included energy-efficient exterior LED lighting as well as new paving for student and administrative parking lots.
These projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23-year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15-year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012.
