Grants from Target to help students from two elementary schools buy clothes and supplies for school

In two separate events, select students from Rolando Park and Central elementary schools are receiving $100 gift cards to shop and purchase school supplies from Target, thanks to multiple grants from the store. Please see below for details.

Event 1

WHAT: Rolando Park Elementary School received a $10,000 grant from Target that will provide 100 students in grades K-5 with $100 gift cards to purchase clothes and school supplies.

WHEN: Thursday, August 23, 2018, 8 a.m.

WHERE: Target - College Grove, 3424 College Ave, San Diego, CA 92115

DETAILS: Students and their parents will have the opportunity to shop when the store first opens.

This is the second consecutive year Rolando Park Elementary students have been awarded a Target grant to buy clothes and school supplies. The school doubled its grant amount this year to include 100 students.

Rolando Park Elementary's partnership with Target and resulting shopping trip for students is one of several reasons the school is being recognized in September by the district with a QSiEN Award for its parent and community engagement efforts. The Quality Schools in Every Neighborhood Awards (QSiEN) are given to schools that show immense progress in reaching goals outlined in the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

SPEAKERS: Rolando Park Principal Anthony DeLuca, students and parents

Event 2

WHAT: The fourth annual San Diego Unified School District Police Department "True Blue Buddies" event will pair 30 deserving second- and third-grade students from Central Elementary School with a San Diego Unified School Police Officer for a $100 back-to-school shopping trip made possible by a $5,000 Target grant. Following the shopping trip, the students and officers will return to Central Elementary for a BBQ lunch, catered by San Diego Unified's Food and Nutrition Services.

WHEN: Thursday, August 23, 2018, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Target - Mission Valley, 1288 Camino Del Rio N, San Diego, CA 92108

DETAILS: The Back-to-School shopping spree serves as the kick-off event to the “True Blue Buddies” yearlong mentorship program that includes four events over the school year - an educational workshop and two holiday gatherings.
