BACKGROUND:

This dedication is of special significance to Kearny High and San Diego Unified. The U. S. Communities Foundation donated $50,000 to the project in memory of former district employee Arthur Hanby, who passed away in 2016.

Hanby, who led the district's Procurement department for more than 16 years, helped save the district millions through his belief and practice in innovation sourcing. It is through this belief that the Strategic Sourcing and Contracts department is able to continually deliver supplies and services to students and staff quickly and at the best value. Under his leadership, the district was recognized year-after-year with the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Procurement Institute.

Beyond being an extraordinary leader and visionary, he was also an exceptional individual. He developed a strong relationship with Kearny High School and its students after he supervised a Kearny student in a district internship program in 2007. Hanby mentored this student until his passing. He also visited Kearny often to speak directly with students and staff to ensure that district contracts where serving site needs. Each year, he and his wife donated personal funds to a college scholarship targeting seniors that had overcome adversity.

The U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance is a government purchasing cooperative that reduces the cost of goods and services by aggregating the purchasing power of public agencies, including school districts, nationwide. When its Foundation learned of Hanby's passing, they generously donated $50,000 to Kearny High School to continue Hanby's legacy.

These funds, in addition to other district and site funds, were used to complete the year-long gym remodel project.

Please confirm your attendance.
