'Salute To Excellence' to Honor Top One Percent of San Diego Unified High School Grads; Outstanding Students in Class of 2017 Honored at Annual Event
WHAT: 2017 "Salute to Excellence"
WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Reception from 4-4:30 p.m.; ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2017. More than 80 students will be honored including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education members and Supt. Cindy Marten. Ed Abeyta, UCSD Assistant Dean and Director, Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Marilyn Hannes, Park President of SeaWorld and Aquatica, will welcome the attendees. Lindsey Latson from Lincoln High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by San Diego High School's Chamber Orchestra.”
This annual event brings students together from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they receive a certificate and a medal marking their achievement. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college. Some of the schools that students will be attending in the fall include Stanford, Cornell, Princeton, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and Yale.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak on their challenges in achieving academic excellence. Each principal will introduce his/her students, then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
