San Diego Unified Celebrates College Signing Day 2018 at Lincoln High School
More than 310 Lincoln High School Graduates will be commemorating their college acceptance offers
WHAT: On Tuesday, May 1, 2018, the College and Career Center at Lincoln High School will celebrate College Signing Day at lunch time, honoring all graduating seniors who will attend college in the fall.
College Signing Day is a nationally recognized event created by former First Lady Michelle Obama under her Reach Higher initiative. This national event celebrates high school seniors choosing to pursue higher education at a professional training program, a community college, a four-year college or university, or the military.
Lincoln High School will host its own event locally in conjunction with the many College Signing Day events around the nation. Students around the country are encouraged to take a selfie in their college shirt using the #CollegeSigningDay and #BetterMakeRoom
“Hosting our inaugural College Signing Day is a valuable opportunity for our graduating seniors to publically celebrate their accomplishments along with the school's entire student body, faculty, staff, parents and the community,” said Lincoln Principal Jose Soto-Ramos.
This year College Signing Day with First Lady Michelle Obama will take place in Philadelphia on May 2 with celebrity guests including Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Zendaya, Kelly Rowland, Rebel Wilson, and Nick Cannon, among others.
The San Diego Unified School District shares the beliefs of the Reach Higher Initiative, in that every student who commits to education beyond high school, whether at a community college, a university, a certification program, or the military deserves to be celebrated just like a celebrity or athlete.
Lincoln High School and its college access partners in the College and Career Center are deeply committed to maintaining a college-going culture for all students. The mission of Lincoln High School is to create a school community that inspires and supports academic excellence and exceptional character.
The event is sponsored by outreach organizations that support Lincoln High School's academic counseling team, including: SDSU Pre-College Institute Talent Search, Wahupa Upward Bound, Cal SOAP, and UC San Diego Upward Bound.

BACKGROUND: College Signing Day and the Reach Higher Initiative, started by former First Lady Michelle Obama during her time at the White House, works to inspire every student in the U.S. to take charge of their future by completing their education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university. Reach Higher continues to help underserved students navigate the college-going process by raising awareness about helpful tools and resources; meeting students where they are and tailoring technical assistance to meet their unique needs; and building the capacity of the school counseling profession. The Reach Higher Initiative now lives at Civic Nation, a non-profit focused on innovative engagement and awareness initiatives.
