Demolition Marks Next Phase of Crawford High School Transformation

September 15, 2020

SAN DIEGO - Construction crews are leveling much of Crawford High School’s aging facilities to make way for a modern, state-of-the-art campus in the latest of a series of dramatic renovations taking place in communities throughout the San Diego Unified School District.

The demolition underway at Crawford is the newest phase of school improvements in the Colina del Sol neighborhood. Just last year, the community saw the completion of a new, state-of-the-art classroom and student services facility at Mann Middle School.

Demolition this week of Crawford’s old auditorium will make way for a striking three-story facility that will rise up from Colts Way. The contemporary new design will feature a performing arts center, 20 classrooms, student services offices, and a secure campus entrance through the new administration office suite.

“A college-like setting,” Superintendent Cindy Marten  said of the new facility coming to Crawford. “By the end of this project, every corner of Crawford will have been upgraded."

This latest project at Crawford comes on the heels of campus-wide renovations to existing classrooms, support spaces, and essential building systems, like fire alarms and emergency communication systems. The renowned College and Career Technical Education Transportation program, which provides students the opportunity to learn key skills that can help them excel in mechanics, engineering, and aviation, has been expanded and fully renovated.

Celebrating Crawford’s rich sports history, the Colt’s athletic program facilities have already been renovated, including the stadium, track, tennis courts, and baseball and softball fields.

“This latest project will be the icing on the cake,” school board Trustee Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne said . “We have always said we are committed to VAPA, sports, and STEAM.  All of these projects at Crawford over the last few years are the manifestation of those commitments.”

Construction on the new performing arts center and classroom building is anticipated to complete in spring 2023.
