SAN DIEGO -- As San Diego Unified works to gradually bring students back to campus, district leaders continue to rely on health and safety guidelines developed with UC San Diego researchers when making decisions about everything from academics to athletics.

The latest development announced this week will allow many high school athletes from throughout the district an opportunity to begin conditioning on campus while observing established district health safeguards.

“This is an important development for student athletes because we know sports are an integral part of a student’s physical and social development,” said Scott Giusti, director of Athletics, PE and Health for San Diego Unified.  “Of course, the health and safety of students and staff continue to be our priority.”

Teams that participate in most CIF-approved outdoor “Season 1 Sports” will be allowed to start holding on-campus outdoor workouts starting Monday, Nov. 16.

San Diego Unified is strictly adhering to health restrictions that fall under San Diego County’s COVID-19 tier designation, which was elevated to purple on Nov. 10, the most restrictive. Socially-distant outdoor athletic conditioning on school campuses does not conflict with county mandates.

Comprehensive health and safety protocols will be in place for conditioning, established in consultation with the California Department of Public Health and San Diego Unified’s Nursing and Wellness and Athletics departments.

Athletes in football, cross country and field hockey will be permitted to condition outside. No indoor facility use will be permitted at this time, including locker rooms, gyms and weight rooms. Social distancing of six feet will be required during workouts. Face masks that cover both the nose and mouth will be required.

After the district evaluates COVID-19 health-related impacts from allowing athletes to train outdoors on campus, and makes any necessary adjustments, the district will be looking to expand conditioning opportunities to other season 1 sports.

No spectators, including media, will be allowed on campuses during conditioning.

Athletes and coaches will be required to complete a Daily Student Athlete Symptom Checklist at home before entering campuses.
