SAN DIEGO - It was history in the making in July for Logan K-8 and Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes, as both schools celebrated the hoisting of the final steel beam on what will become the TK-8 portion of the Logan Memorial Educational Complex.

The campuses are transforming into a single comprehensive TK-12 educational complex. When complete, the complex will house the first high school in Logan Heights' history.

Logan K-8 Principal Jose Villar said the beam, along with the project, symbolizes more than just new buildings in Logan Heights.

“They symbolize growth in this community,” Villar said.

The campus transformation reconfigures the existing Logan K-8 campus to provide a new elementary school for TK-through-fifth grades, with a sixth grade academy. The TK-5 campus will house a new administrative office space, a multi-purpose building with food service facilities, and a two-story wing of classrooms.

The existing Memorial Preparatory sixth-through-eighth grade site will become a 7th-12th grade campus. Three existing buildings along Logan Ave. will become a theater, kitchen/cafeteria, and career pathways educational spaces. A new gymnasium, administration/library building, and two two-story classroom buildings will also be constructed.

“These are things that will help future students succeed in the real world,” said Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes Principal Mirna Estrada. “Our future students will also have a campus they can be proud of.”

Newly appointed director Nicola Labas will take time during the construction project to meet with families and the community to work on naming the site and coordinating which resources will benefit students the most.

“We want to create a campus that fulfills the needs of each and every student,” Labas said. “We can only do that if we work alongside families and the community.”

Labas is also working with district leaders, Principal Villar, and Principal Estrada to create prenatal-to-career resources for expecting mothers and young students.

The Logan Memorial Educational Complex is fully funded through Propositions S & Z, passed by local voters.

San Diego Unified Board Trustee Richard Barrera said these propositions have given the district the power to restore or transform many schools within the district.

“Because of voters, we can support local business owners, while giving our students the learning environments they deserve," Barrera said.

Labas said the vision for the complex is to provide more resources to the community than they currently have.

“How we do that will be my focus over the next year,” Labas said.

Construction for the 9th-12th grade facilities is anticipated to start in fall 2020.
