Educators from Clay Elementary, Marston Middle, and Scripps Ranch High Schools Selected as District Teachers of the Year

SAN DIEGO – Andrea Loyko from Clay Elementary School, Joe Paulson from Marston Middle School and Josh Rosenberg from Scripps Ranch High School have been named San Diego Unified School District’s 2022 Teachers of the Year. Kimberly Frank from Standley Middle School, Rich Redmond from Baker Elementary, and Jen Harden from San Diego High School (Business and Leadership) have been named this year’s Runners-Up. Teacher of the Year candidates go through a rigorous selection process, first being selected by the staff members at their school, then a panel including former Teachers of the Year.

In observance of National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 1-8, 2022, these six devoted educators will be honored at the Day of the Teacher celebration on Tuesday, May 3, at 5 p.m. during a virtual ceremony, hosted by CBS 8’s Shawn Styles. More than 130 Teachers of the Year from individual schools will also be honored. During this week, San Diego Unified encourages everyone to honor teachers by sharing a post, image, or video of a special educator in their life. The district challenges San Diegans to thank a teacher either in person, or on social media platforms using the hashtag #ThankATeacherSD.

“I am honored to lead a district that employs the finest teachers in the nation. This year’s Teachers of the Year make that undoubtedly apparent,” said Superintendent Dr. Lamont  Jackson. “As we honor our distinguished teachers and celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, let us all take a moment to thank the educators in our district and city for all they do for our students year round. Let us honor them through our words and actions. This week is set aside to appreciate teachers, let’s remember to appreciate them every day, because the work they do will impact our lives, our community, and our world for years to come.”

The Day of the Teacher celebration is a traditional event on the Board of Education calendar. All board members and senior district staff, community leaders, and elected officials take part in honoring the distinguished educators. A virtual ceremony will feature original student created-content performed by students from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.

This year’s virtual event is co-hosted by North Island Credit Union. “As part of our mission to serve and support our education community, we are honored to once again celebrate our outstanding educators as co-host of the 2022 San Diego Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year program,” said North Island Credit Union President/CEO Steve O’Connell. “The commitment of all our teachers to go above and beyond for their students through the challenges of the past year has been an inspiration to us all. We congratulate each of these recipients and express our deep gratitude to all the educators across our community who continue to bring their dedication and creativity to keep students learning and thriving.”

Additional sponsors of the event are California Coast Credit Union, California Schools VEBA, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit, Mission Federal Credit Union, M2 Video Productions, San Diego Education Association, and the San Diego Education Fund.
